What changed

The U.S. State Department has updated its travel advice for the United Arab Emirates. This change started on 29 August 2026. This update specifically changes who can travel. Family members of U.S. government employees in the UAE can now live there. The overall advice, 'Level 3: Reconsider Travel', for the UAE has not changed. This is because of ongoing risks from terrorism and armed conflict.

What changed

The Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship has updated Emirates ID renewal rules for citizens. From 14 July 2026, citizens can renew their Emirates ID cards up to one year before they expire. This replaces the old rule of six months. This change aims to improve government services and make administrative tasks simpler for citizens.

The United Arab Emirates and the Kingdom of Bahrain started the "One-Point Air Travelers" project in February 2026. This project adds pre-clearance steps. It uses advanced digital systems. This makes border crossing easier for citizens travelling between the two countries. The project is now in use at Zayed International Airport and Bahrain International Airport. It aims to reduce waiting times. It also aims to make travel more efficient.

What changed

The UAE has broadened the categories of people who can qualify for its Golden Visa, a long-term residence visa for selected foreign investors, entrepreneurs, professionals, talented individuals, students and other eligible groups. The current UAE government guidance lists eligible categories including investors, entrepreneurs, exceptional talents and specialists, outstanding students and graduates, humanitarian pioneers and frontline heroes. Golden Visas are generally issued for 5 or 10 years, depending on the category. The expansion is designed to attract and retain people whose skills, investment, research, business activity or achievements are considered valuable to the UAE. Important: Golden Visa eligibility is category-specific. Being a skilled professional or having a high salary does not automatically qualify someone.
