Georgia Changes Residence-Permit and Related Immigration Rules

What changed

Georgia will change its Law on the Legal Status of Aliens and Stateless Persons from 1 September 2026. These changes affect several ways to get a residence permit and how officials check applications. Key changes include a new study residence permit for adults, a new residence permit for spouses of Georgian citizens before they can get permanent residence, stronger powers for officials to check information, new reasons to refuse residence permits, changes to how applications are reviewed, and new rules about how long some study permit holders must stay in Georgia. These changes also affect visa rules. From 1 September, Georgia will introduce a D6 immigration visa for children who study in Georgia. It will change the D3 study visa to focus on adults. Also, a long-term visa will generally be needed to get a Georgian residence permit, unless there is a special reason not to. Legislation passed these changes in June 2026. However, some rules will specifically start on 1 September 2026.
