UK Immigration Rules Appendix E Updated: Outdated Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Dependant Provisions Removed
Current rules
The Home Office has removed outdated provisions from Appendix E that related to the former Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) dependant framework. The current Appendix is now narrowly defined. GOV.UK states: “Appendix E applies only to applications as a dependent partner or dependent child of a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Migrant.”
Overview
The UK Home Office has updated Appendix E — Maintenance Funds for the Family of Relevant Points-Based System Migrants to remove outdated provisions relating to Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Migrant dependants. Appendix E is now a legacy immigration provision. The current GOV.UK page states that it applies only to applications by a dependent partner or dependent child of a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Migrant.

What changed in the latest version
Before
Appendix E used to contain rules about maintenance funds for family members of several types of Points-Based System migrants. The Points-Based System is a UK immigration system that scores applicants on different points. The rules listed specific amounts of money that a family member needed. The amount depended on the main applicant's visa type. For example, older versions of the rules said a family member needed £1,890. This applied to applications linked to a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Migrant in certain situations. The overall system also had different maintenance rules. These depended on whether the main applicant was a Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 4, or another Points-Based System migrant. These rules were created when the Points-Based System still included the first Tier 1 and Tier 2 visa routes. Over time, most of those visa routes were closed. New immigration categories replaced them.
After
The Home Office has removed old rules from Appendix E. These rules were about family members of the former Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa route. The current Appendix E is now very specific. GOV.UK says: “Appendix E applies only to applications as a dependent partner or dependent child of a Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Migrant.” A dependent partner is a husband, wife, civil partner, or unmarried partner. A dependent child is a child of the main applicant.
This change is mainly a cleanup of the Immigration Rules. It is not a new immigration policy. The Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) visa was an older UK business immigration route. This route is now closed to new applicants. But some people can still have immigration rights connected to this route. This is because they got permission under the old system. The Immigration Rules have continued to include rules for these legacy cases. Appendix E specifically deals with the maintenance funds needed from certain family members of Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) migrants. The change in August 2026 removes rules that are no longer needed. So, this change does not create a new financial rule. It does not change the usual maintenance fund rules for current visa routes. This applies to people applying under current immigration routes.
Explained simply
Imagine the government had old instructions for how much money someone's family needed to show if they were coming to the UK with a special 'entrepreneur' visa. Now, they've deleted some of those old instructions because the main entrepreneur visa itself isn't really open to new people anymore. It's like tidying up an old recipe book by crossing out ingredients for a dish you don't cook anymore. You still need to show you have enough money, but some of the specific details about 'how much' or 'where to keep it' have been removed, making the rules simpler and less specific.

The UK Immigration Rules Appendix E, which lists maintenance funds rules for family members of Tier 1 (Entrepreneur) Migrants, has changed. Several paragraphs have been removed. These changes became active on 3 August 2026. They are part of wider changes to the Immigration Rules. But many detailed rules about how funds must be available and which banks can hold them have been removed.
