UK Updates VIP Delegate Visa Processing Time and Application Requirements
Current rules
A decision on a VIP Delegate visa application is provided within 10 working days.
Overview
The UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has revised its guidance for the Very Important Person (VIP) Delegate visa, affecting government officials travelling to the UK with a head of state or government minister. The previous option for a digital record of exemption has been removed, making the physical visa mandatory. Additionally, applicants must now provide proof of sufficient funds for their visit, and the UKVI has committed to a 10-working-day decision period. These changes are effective from 24 August 2026.
Who is affected by the latest change
- Government officials coming to the UK with a head of state or a serving government minister on an official visit
- Individuals aged 18 or over
- Serving government officials coming to the UK with a group of government officials on an official visit
- Individuals with a written notification (Note Verbale) from their government confirming name, date of birth, passport number and role
What changed in the latest version
Before
Before, the advice for the VIP Delegate visa said that decisions on applications would be made more quickly than the previous 15 working days stated in the general guidance. This visa route was already available to eligible government officials who travelled with a head of state or a serving government minister on an official visit.
After
A decision on a VIP Delegate visa application will be given within 10 working days.
This change means that people applying for the VIP Delegate visa can expect a faster decision on their application. This cuts the waiting time by five working days. This quicker process can be very helpful for planning official visits. It allows for more flexible scheduling and may make things clearer for delegates. Officials and the government departments that support them will need to adjust their expectations for application timings. They will benefit from the quicker processing. The main requirements and conditions for getting the visa have not changed. So, the main effect is on how efficiently the process works, not on the basic policy.
Explained simply
Imagine you're going on a school trip to a special event in another country with your head teacher. Before, you might have just needed a special permission slip that showed you were part of the group, which was like a 'digital exemption'. Now, it's like you definitely need a proper visa sticker in your passport. Also, your permission slip needs to show you have pocket money for your trip, and the people checking your application will tell you if it's approved within two weeks. You can't just show up anymore; you need that official stamp and proof you can cover your costs.
