Nova Scotia Expands Immigration Selection Priorities for 2026 to Retain Workers
What changed
Nova Scotia has started a one-off expansion of its immigration selection priorities for 2026. This takes effect on 14 July 2026. It applies to the Nova Scotia Nominee Program (NSNP) and the Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP). This change allows the province to select more candidates. These candidates must have an active Expression of Interest (EOI) submitted by 30 June 2026. They must already be working in Nova Scotia. Their work permit must expire in 2026 or earlier. They must also meet specific new rules. Nova Scotia aims to match current labour market needs. It also wants to keep skilled workers within the number of people it can nominate for immigration, as set by the federal government.

What changed
The Danish Immigration Service has resumed the processing of applications for permanent residence and specific family reunification cases. What changed
UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) has updated its internal guidance for caseworkers dealing with Long Residence applications. From 8 October 2026, this guidance makes it clear that if an application for permission to stay under the Long Residence route doesn't meet its specific eligibility or suitability rules, the Secretary of State *may* change it to an application under 'Appendix FM' (for family life) or 'Appendix Private Life'. This change is designed to offer a clear path for some applicants who might otherwise have their application refused. It allows their case to be considered under other immigration routes without them needing to pay a new application fee.
