South Africa Cancels Dormant Traffic Register Numbers (TRNs) for Foreign Nationals
What changed
The Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) on Migration announced that the Department of Transport (DOT) has cancelled dormant Traffic Register Numbers (TRNs) for foreign nationals. This rule started on 4 September 2026. It applies to TRNs issued from 1 January 2000 to 30 June 2023. These TRNs had to be inactive after a government notice on 7 August 2026. This is part of the government's wider five-point plan to manage migration and stop rule breaking.

The South African Border Management Authority (BMA) is setting up a new Vehicle Targeting System (VTS) at border crossings. This is to make border security better and to stop vehicles being smuggled. The system, which is a partnership with the International Vehicle Identification Desk, will start operating on 18 October 2026 at the Lebombo Port of Entry. At the same time, air travellers will face a small overall increase of 32 cents per passenger. These changes aim to ensure that Customs continues to recover its costs for border processing while adapting to expected passenger volumes.

The UK Home Secretary has announced that, from 15 October 2026, Eritrean VIPs and government officials will no longer have fast-track access to UK visas. This action, along with new travel restrictions for Eritrean diplomats in the UK, is aimed at Eritrea because it is not cooperating with the return of its nationals who are in the UK without permission. The Home Secretary has also threatened a complete ban on visas for all Eritrean citizens if Eritrea does not quickly improve its cooperation on returns.
