U.S. State Department Maintains Level 2 Travel Advisory for Peru: Exercise Increased Caution Due to Crime, Unrest, Kidnapping, and Terrorism

On 4 September 2026, the U.S. State Department reissued its Travel Advisory for Peru. It remains at Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution. The advisory still highlights risks of crime, unrest, kidnapping, and terrorism across the country. One change is that U.S. government employees in Peru can now travel at night with commercial bus companies on certain routes. These routes include the Pan-American Highway, to Huaraz, and the Lima-Arequipa-Cusco corridor. General driving at night is still forbidden.
