UK Airports to Roll Out Contactless eGates for Streamlined Border Entry
What changed
The UK Home Office is introducing new contactless technology at airport eGates, enabling eligible passengers to clear border control without physically presenting their passports. This system, which commenced its phased rollout on 6 October 2026, uses facial recognition to verify passenger identity against verified immigration, travel, and passport information. Initially launched at East Midlands Airport for British citizens, the technology will be deployed across all UK airport eGates by early 2027 and extended to other nationalities currently eligible for eGates in the coming months. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency and improve the travelling experience while upholding robust border security.
