UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for Visitors: Requirements and Application Process
What changed
The UK Home Office has given detailed rules for the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. The rules start now. Most visitors from countries that do not need a visa must get an ETA. This includes people from Europe, the USA, Australia, and Canada. They need an ETA if they want to travel to the UK, Jersey, Guernsey, or the Isle of Man for up to six months. An ETA costs £20 for each person. It usually takes three working days to process. It allows you to enter multiple times while it is valid.

United StatesEntry RulesProposalIssued 13 Oct 2026 U.S. Customs and Border Protection Proposes Mandatory Advance Traveller Information for Rail
What changed
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has put forward a proposed rule that would make it a requirement for rail carriers to send electronic advance traveller information for all people, including crew and passengers, who are arriving in or leaving the United States by train. This requirement would also extend to rail carriers having to send advance notices of arrival or departure for the trains themselves. The aim of this proposal is to improve security and to make legitimate international rail travel smoother, addressing a current gap in national security for rail travel. You must send any comments on this proposed rule by 14 December 2026.

What changed
On 12 October 2026, the UK Home Office announced that the government had put forward two changes to the Immigration and Asylum Bill. These changes aim to make the assessment of family-life claims under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) stricter and to address asylum and other immigration claims made very shortly before someone is due to be removed from the UK. These proposals are part of a wider set of laws intended to strengthen immigration control, reduce chances for procedural delays, and change how human rights arguments are considered in immigration cases.

What changed
The UK Home Office has published updated guidance for caseworkers regarding the cancellation and curtailment of pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) and limited leave granted via an EUSS Family Permit. This guidance, updated on 12 October 2026, details new discretionary grounds for cancellation and curtailment, including the submission of false information, fraudulent assistance in obtaining immigration benefits, and involvement in marriages or civil partnerships of convenience. The changes, reflecting Statement of Changes in Immigration Rules HC 584, mean that individuals holding pre-settled status face a broader range of circumstances under which their leave may be withdrawn.
