Germany Amends Nationality Act: Naturalisation Period Set at Minimum Five Years, Fast-Track Option Abolished

The German Federal Government has changed the Nationality Act (Staatsangehörigkeitsgesetz). This change sets a minimum period of five years of living in Germany before a person can become a citizen. This rule started on 30 October 2025. It ends the previous fast-track option. That option allowed people to apply after three years if they showed special integration achievements. The change aims to make the link stronger between becoming a citizen and settling into German society in a lasting way.
