South Africa Relocates Asylum Seekers and Refugees to Lindela Repatriation Centre

The South African Department of Home Affairs has started moving 278 asylum seekers and refugees. They were living in an informal settlement in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal. They are moving to the Lindela Repatriation Centre in Krugersdorp, Gauteng. A repatriation centre is a place where people who do not have legal permission to be in a country are held before they are sent back to their home country. Sometimes asylum seekers and refugees are also housed there during processing. This started on 15 September 2026. The Inter-Ministerial Committee on Migration told them to do this. This came after many talks with the affected communities and other groups.
