Temporary Protection Directive for Ukraine Extended, with New Condition for New Applications
What changed
The European Union has extended the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) for Ukrainian people who have been displaced. This protection will now last until 4 March 2028. A new rule will start on 5 August 2026. People applying for the first time who have military duties in Ukraine must now show proof. They need to prove they have completed these duties or have an official reason not to do them. This policy makes sure that people who already have protection can keep it. It also adds a specific condition for new applicants.

What changed
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has implemented an interim final rule, effective from 14 October 2026, to expedite the termination of refugee status for individuals deemed ineligible at the point of their admission to the United States. This regulatory amendment significantly shortens the period for responding to a Notice of Intent to Terminate (NOIT) from 30 days to ten days. The change applies across the United States and is intended to bolster the integrity of the immigration system and address concerns related to national security and public safety. Consequently, individuals facing a NOIT will have a dramatically reduced timeframe to present their case.

SwedenRefugeesPublishedEffective 7 Oct 2026 Sweden Can Transfer Only Around 350 Quota Refugees in 2026 After Late Government Guidance
What changed
The Swedish Migration Agency has assessed that only about 350 quota refugees will be transferred to Sweden during 2026. This figure represents a significant reduction from the established annual quota of 900 individuals. The revision stems from the government's delayed announcement regarding the specific nationalities and groups for this year's selection. Consequently, the agency faces practical limitations that prevent the transfer of the full annual refugee quota.

What changed
The United States has set a maximum limit of 17,500 refugee admissions for the financial year 2027, with the main focus on admitting Afrikaners from South Africa. This decision is officially confirmed in Presidential Determination No. 2026-24, which the President signed on 25 September 2026 and was published in the Federal Register on 2 October. It allows for the admission of up to 17,500 refugees during the financial year, which runs from 1 October 2026 to 30 September 2027. The determination says these admissions are justified because of humanitarian concerns or because they are otherwise in the national interest.
