Netherlands Initiates Pilot Scheme for New Family Reunification Rules, Pauses Decisions on Affected Applications

What changed

The Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) has implemented a pilot scheme as of 12 June 2026 to assess family reunification applications under new, more restrictive rules, following the introduction of a two-status system for asylum permit holders. This impacts over 19,000 applications submitted before this date. Decisions on cases affected by the new rules but not part of the pilot will be postponed until courts have provided clarity on the legal interpretation and retroactive application of these rules.
