What changed

The Netherlands has opened a public consultation on a new bill that would make actively frustrating a person's own return from the Netherlands a criminal offence in certain circumstances. Minister for Asylum and Migration Van den Brink presented the proposal on 7 October 2026, and the Ministry of Justice and Security opened the draft law for public consultation on the same day. The consultation will run until 18 November 2026.

What changed

The Netherlands' Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) has announced a reorganisation of its asylum application processing. This new approach prioritises fresh asylum applications in line with the European Asylum and Migration Pact, effective from 12 June 2026. For over 54,000 outstanding applications submitted before this date, the IND will introduce a categorised and grouped processing method from 1 October 2026, with the aim of issuing a first decision within three years for as many as possible.

The Immigratie- en Naturalisatiedienst (IND) has updated its guide on how to apply for asylum in the Netherlands. A main change is that people who asked for asylum before 12 June will follow a different process. People applying on or after this date will follow a new process. The updated process explains the requirements for refugee status, subsidiary protection, and family members. Refugee status means you are protected because you fear persecution in your home country. Subsidiary protection means you are protected because you face serious harm in your home country. The process covers all steps, from your first arrival and checks, to legal advice and the final decision on your residence permit.

What changed

The European Union has extended the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) for Ukrainian people who have been displaced. This protection will now last until 4 March 2028. A new rule will start on 5 August 2026. People applying for the first time who have military duties in Ukraine must now show proof. They need to prove they have completed these duties or have an official reason not to do them. This policy makes sure that people who already have protection can keep it. It also adds a specific condition for new applicants.

What changed

The U.S. Department of State (USDOS) has updated its travel advice for Saba. This change is effective immediately. It has revised the summary part of the advice. Saba still has a 'Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions' status. The updated summary gives more specific details about possible crime risks and limits on medical services. This makes things clearer for U.S. travellers. It does not change the overall risk assessment.
