Before
Before these changes, people could generally travel between Spain and Italy without border checks. This is because both countries are part of the Schengen area. This practice followed the rules of the Schengen Agreement. Italy had already put temporary border checks on people arriving from Spain. This also affected the Schengen rules.
After
Spain has put border checks on all air and sea travel from Italy. These checks began at midnight (10:00 PM Greenwich Mean Time) on 7 August 2026. They are planned to end on 7 September 2026. This period may change. People arriving in Spain from Italy by air or sea will have immigration checks. Some travellers have reported that everyone must show their passport. Italy also keeps its own border checks for people who are not citizens of the EU and are arriving from Spain.
The checks began on 8 August 2026. This was after Italy temporarily stopped the Schengen free movement rules with Spain on 1 August. Italy had started specific checks on travellers coming from Spain. Spain first responded by doing the same. Spain said its checks would stay until 7 September 2026. Many people arriving in Ceuta from Morocco on 30 July caused this. Spanish officials believe about 49,000 people crossed into Ceuta in one day. However, different reports give different numbers.
