What changed

New Zealand's Minister of Internal Affairs, Brooke van Velden, announced that an in-person citizenship test will be introduced as part of the citizenship by grant process from late 2027. Aspeq Limited has been appointed to design and deliver this new test. This initiative is designed to ensure that applicants seeking citizenship possess a sufficient understanding of their responsibilities and privileges as citizens of New Zealand, thereby strengthening the meaning of citizenship. The test will cover concepts such as freedom of speech and the principle of equality before the law.

What changed

Immigration New Zealand has put a new mixed selection system in place for the Parent Resident Visa category, starting from 5 October 2026. This change means all valid Expressions of Interest (EOIs) are now in a single group. About 90% will be chosen from this group in the order they were submitted, like a queue, and the other 10% will be picked randomly. The yearly limit of 2,500 visa approvals remains the same, and the first selection under this new system is planned for 10 November 2026.

What changed

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is transitioning to a fully online application process for most visitor and transit visas. Effective from 1 October 2026, individuals applying for these visa types must use the enhanced Immigration Online system, as paper submissions will no longer be routinely accepted. This move aims to streamline processes, reduce paperwork, and improve the efficiency and accuracy of visa applications within New Zealand's jurisdiction.

What changed

Effective from 28 September 2026, Immigration New Zealand has implemented new requirements for managed funds and direct investments linked to the Active Investor Plus (AIP) Visa. These updates compel managed funds to submit investment deployment plans, enforce a six-month waiting period for reapplication after a decline, and grant Invest New Zealand greater authority over approved investments. The changes are designed to elevate the calibre of investments, provide clarity for investors and fund managers, and ensure investments contribute effectively to New Zealand's economic development.

What changed

Effective from 25 September 2026, Immigration New Zealand has introduced new age and evidence requirements for specific partnership-based visa categories. Both the applicant and the supporting partner must now be at least 18 years of age at the time of application, and only partnership evidence accumulated from when both parties were aged 18 or over will be considered valid. This change primarily impacts applicants for partnership-based residence visas, who must now demonstrate a 12-month cohabitation period starting after both partners turned 18.

What changed

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is making it compulsory to use its improved Immigration Online system for most new visitor visa applications. This change takes effect on 24 September 2026. From this date, you will not be able to start new applications in the old system. All draft applications that have not been submitted in the old system will be deleted by 8 October 2026. This aims to make the application process smoother across different types of visitor visas in New Zealand.
